history (game information):
Riou is the adopted son of a former war hero/traitor Genkaku and the younger step brother of Nanami. He's also best friends with Jowy Atreides-Blight. While growing up under Genkaku's wing, Jowy, Nanami, and Riou all learned martial arts from Genkaku and became really close and best friends. Riou and Jowy constantly got into trouble, and Nanami sometimes helped bail them out. When they grew older, and after Genkaku passed away, Jowy & Riou both left to join the Unicorn Brigade of the Highland Army.

Shortly after going on a training expedition, the Unicorn Brigade was massacred by their own army who placed the blame on the Jowston City-States, which started a war between Highland & Jowston. While being held captive by Viktor and his mercenary group, Riou was reunited with Jowy and started working under Viktor, running little errands and whatnot. On the way back from an errand to Muse, Prince Luca Blight attacked the city of Toto and Riou & Jowy saw that aftermath of the slaughter. While following Pilika, a little girl who first saved Jowy, the two friends came upon a tomb that sheltered the two halves of the Rune of Beginning.

Here, the two became the owners of the two halves: Jowy, the Black Sword rune, Riou, the Bright Shield rune. Shortly after obtaining the runes, the two made their way to Muse and then separated because of different opinions of the war. Jowy, who betrayed his best friend, went back to the Highland Army and became a soldier, helping the Highland Army invade and take over the City-States (and later becoming King of Highland). Riou, on the other hand, became the leader of the Dunan Unification Army, attempting to (and successfully) unifying the City-States to stand before the Highland Army.

Riou didn't want to face off against his own friend, but continued so, protecting the City-States from the invading forces and, in the end, he won the war. There were three endings to this game. We are following the ending where both Jowy & Nanami are alive and that they either traveled together or had spilt apart while traveling. (In Nanami's case cheerful_nanami, she was teleported to Budehuc Castle after the Dunan Unification War.)

There has been many various Riou's at the Suikoden RPG.
I. riou
A short lived verison of Riou. He seemed a little depressed, but after that, he, like, disappeared.
II. riou_caelum
Another short lived riou. But this one actually was cheerful, though he did interact with characters. He was friends with Rody, Clive, Tir (he was known as Kitsune then), and many others.
III. shiningshield
One of the most hated or disliked Riou's that we had in the community. ^^; He came to Budehuc, claiming to have bared both the sword & shield rune, creating the Rune of Beginning. (Though, at the time, we had a Jowy with the Black Sword rune and a Nanami was being created.) He also believed that his older step sister and best friend Jowy were dead, so he was constantly depressed and untrusting of people. However, he had a crush on Cecile, causing a possible love triangle between Cecile & Thomas.. which said love triangle didn't last too long.

history (current incarnation):
I took Riou over, shortly after the previous Riou was kicked out for godmodding and other various reasons. And so, to explain his sudden change of behavior, he exclaimed that he ate a weird sweet smelling pie while on his hike back to Budehuc Castle. Everyone didn't really trust him at first, but after a while, he grew on them. Though, Riou has developed a horrible wanderlust, so he often travels outside of Budehuc for mostly no reason... well, mostly for a sense of adventure. He's returned to the castle two other times now (one explaining that he had to help rebuild an inn in Harmonia, the other was to act as a bodyguard for Yun - birdcaged_yun. And now he's back, trying to interact with everyone and help search of missing peoples and aiding in battles. ...oh, and his sister's cooking still can almost kill him.
